An API is simply a piece of software that users can call to get certain pieces of information. The information is often encoded in a standard format, called "documentation."

The most fundamental property that defines an API is that it gives the caller the ability to control how it sends data to the service.

With this ability comes the responsibility of designing the system in such a way that it's easy for developers to accomplish their tasks without getting in each others' way. To make APIs useful, you must give them clear conventions for data structures, action verbs, and URL encoding rules.

With experience comes improvement.
